When to Renew a Passport: The U.S. Department of State site recommends applying to renew a passport approximately nine (9) months before the passport expiration date. Some countries require a passport to be valid during at least six (6) months beyond the dates of traveling to such country. Some airlines will not allow boarding a plane if the passport expiration date does not comply with destination country travel requirements.
Where to Renew: Application for a U.S. passport can be submitted at a Passport Acceptance Facility or Passport Agency. If the applicant is located outside of the U.S. then the application for renewal can be filed at a U.S. consulate or embassy abroad. Order this guide to learn more details about the passport renewal process and to learn how to start your passport application. Renewals may be submitted by mail if certain conditions apply.   Passport Book vs. Passport Card: A U.S. Passport Card is valid when entering or leaving the United States to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry.
